High-speed route to Frankfurt Airport

The Raunheim Mönchwald – Raunheim Mönchhof railway is a 2.7 km long, single-track connecting curve near Raunheim . It connects the high-speed route Cologne – Rhine / Main near the Hessian city of Raunheim, north of Frankfurt Airport , with the Mainz – Frankfurt am Main railway .

The route can be driven continuously at 130 km / h and is equipped with a regular train control from km 2.1 .

course

The track threaded on branch Mönchwald with kilometer 0.0 at kilometer 17.4 of the Main Railway ( Mainz main station - Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof ) from. It runs in a south-easterly direction in an arch and crosses under the A 3 by means of a 194-meter-long crossing structure. At the Mönchhof junction , it merges with kilometer 2.6 in kilometer 163.4 of the new line to Frankfurt.

The maximum longitudinal incline is 35 per thousand. Due to this gradient, it can only be used by conventional trains if a load restriction is observed ( DB series 103, for example, with 11 cars). The line is one of the steepest main railways in Germany .

history

The line was built from the mid-1990s as part of the construction of the high-speed line.

In addition to the 211 m long intersection structure below the A3, west of the Mönchhof triangle , various trough and support structures as well as 1,850 m of noise protection walls were built.

It was put into operation on May 30, 1999, together with the southern section of the new line and the airport long-distance station . The line train control was retrofitted later, so the permissible speed had to be reduced in the direction of Mainz.

In the 2010 timetable, it will be used by one IC / ICE train per hour and direction during the day .

A two-track expansion of the line is structurally prepared.
