The Sirte – Benghazi railway is a double-track , 554-kilometer-long railway construction project in Libya . Work started in 2008 and stopped in 2011. In the final stage, the line is to connect the cities of Sirte and Benghazi , the second largest city in the country.

course

The line is to be built parallel to the Mediterranean coast and the Great Syrte . The superstructure is designed as planned h to 250 km /, a speed that can only be achieved, however, if the electrification takes place, but which is provided only in a second step. At the beginning, the operation should therefore be carried out with diesel locomotives and with a top speed of 160 km / h.

In addition to its two endpoints, the new route will also include the cities of as-Sultan , an-Nufalija , Ben Jawad , as-Sidr , Ra's Lanuf , al-Agheila and Brega (al-Burayqah), Ajdabiya , as-Suitina , al-Magrun , Open up Qaminis . In total, it should have six larger train stations and other stops.

The line is the continuation of the Ras Ejder – Sirt railway , the connection from the Tunisian border at Ras Ejder via Tripoli to Sirte. Both routes are part of a future rail link from Morocco to Egypt that will cross North Africa .

Status of work

The detailed planning, including train stations, access roads and level crossings, was awarded to Bernard Ingenieure ZT GmbH. The construction contract for the 554 km long route was awarded to RŽD in 2008, which began work on August 30, 2008. In March 2010, 14 km of the route were completed. Another two years are planned for construction. At General Electric 16 diesel locomotives for later operation are ordered to be built by 2011. 3500 workers from Libya and Russia are to be deployed in the project. The costs should amount to 2.2 billion euros . In the vicinity of the future Ra's Lanuf freight yard, 400 residential units were built for construction personnel. When the uprising in Libya broke out in February 2011, work was interrupted and all foreign personnel from the Russian Ministry of Civil Protection were evacuated by sea. A resumption of work is planned according to a media report.
