An-Nufalija ( Arabic النوفلية; also: an Nawfalīyah , an Nūfalīyah , En-Nofilía , Nufilia , Zauia en-Nofilia , Zauiet en-Nofilia ) is a city near the Mediterranean coast ( Great Syrte ) in the Munizip Surt in Libya .

About 2600 people live in the village and it is located about 20 km west of Ben Jawad and 15 km southeast of Marsa al Uwayja . The regional capital Sirt is located about 140 km west of Nufalija. Off the coast road , the place is ten kilometers to the south at 59 m above sea level.

The Africa Corps reached Nofilia in February 1941.

In January 1928, the Italian Air Force dropped 10 phosgene bombs on the civilian population of Nofilia, committing a war crime . A concentration camp for about 225 people was later set up in the village . During the Africa campaign in World War II , the site was the scene of a minor battle at the end of 1942, when retreating German DAK troops were stranded due to a lack of fuel. At that time Nufalija / Nofilia was a small fort with a few Italian buildings, a mosque , shops and a school.

The city reached during the civil war in Libya in 2011 from 27. March 2011 for the first time into the hands of anti-Gaddafi troops. However, it was recaptured soon afterwards.

At the beginning of 2015, the place came into the hands of IS militias .
