Brega ( al-Buraiqa ) ( Arabic مرسا البريقة, DMG Marsā al-Buraiqa ) is the southernmost port city in the Mediterranean. It is located in the area of ​​the Great Syrte in northern Libya and has been part of the enlarged Munizip al-Wahat since 2007 .

Surname

The place was known during the Italian occupation as Mersa Brega , Marsa el-Brega or Port Brega , other Arabic names are Marsā al-Burayqah or Al Brayqah . During the Africa campaign in 1941, Erwin Rommel referred to the place as the "Gateway to Cyrenaica ". Until 2007 the place belonged to the municipality of Ajdabiya .

Infrastructure

Brega is located near a bay and consists of several settlement bodies. The newer city was built in precast concrete. The concept comes from the Greek city planner and architect Konstantinos A. Doxiadis . In 2010 there were about 7300 inhabitants in the city.

Brega has numerous industrial facilities, including the oil refinery of Sirt Oil Company , which at the beginning of the 1960s by a joint venture was operated until Esso early 1980s withdrew from Libya. The oil port is operated by the Brega Oil Marketing Company , which is also owned by the Libyan National Oil Corporation .

The Bright Star University of Technology is located 10 kilometers east of Brega .

Al Burayqah Airport ( Marsa Brega Airport ), which offers flight connections to Tripoli , is located in the south of the city . In future, the city will be connected to the Sirt – Benghazi railway line .

history

During the Second Italo-Libyan War , Italy maintained the large Marsa al Brega concentration camp from 1931 to 1933 . During the civil war in Libya in 2011 , Brega was repeatedly the scene of clashes between government and opposition forces. The city fell to government troops on March 30, 2011 and was retaken by rebel troops in August 2011.
