Swell:

The Veles – Kremenica railway is a railway line in North Macedonia .

history

Bitola station (then: Monastir ) in the First World War

The connection was opened at the end of the 19th century as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 600 mm in a slightly different route . It started at Gradsko station on the Tabanovce – Gevgelija railway line . There was also a 600 mm narrow-gauge railway from Veles to Stevanci . Today's standard gauge line was built between 1931 and 1936, using the existing routes of both narrow-gauge railways in sections.

On the southernmost section, between Bitola and Kremenica , passenger traffic was stopped in 1991, freight traffic was only sporadic. The 16 km long section between Bitola and the border with Greece has been rehabilitated since 2015. The project was financially supported by the European Union . In spring 2019, the work was completed and test drives took place. In April 2020, however, there was still no scheduled operation.

Technical parameters

The line is single-track and not electrified. The maximum gradient is 25 ‰, the maximum permissible speed (on a few sections) 100 km / h.

Traffic geography

Entrance building of the Прилөп / Prilep station

The route branches off from the main Tabanovci – Gevgelija route in Veles . It is one of two in the country that enabled a border crossing to Greece - but the section between Bitola and the Kremenica border station has not been used for many years. The infrastructure there connects to that of the Greek OSE .

The most demanding section of the route is between Bogomila and Gostiražni. There is an incline of 25 ‰ and the route has a 180 ° bend.

In Bakarno Gumno a 30 km long route branches off to Sopotnica. It, too, was originally opened as a narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 600 mm, was changed to standard gauge by 1957 and was most recently only used by freight trains. Before 2012 the traffic was stopped there.

traffic

The Roadmap 2020 run daily three Interregio - pairs of trains from Skopje via Veles Bitola. Until 2018, the fourth pair of trains still operated an Interregio-Express, which required a reservation, with a few stops in between.
