The Winsen – Niedermarschacht railway line is a standard-gauge railway line operated by the East Hanoverian Railways .

history

Even before the Winsen – Hützel railway line was completed, the Winsen district was considering building a line along the Elbe. Since there was an Elbe ferry in Niedermarschacht, the district council decided in 1908 to build the route to this place. For this purpose, a separate company Kleinbahn Winsen-Niedermarschacht GmbH was founded. Operations started on April 1, 1912. There was an operational management community with the other Winsener Kleinbahn before the Lower Saxony State Small Railroad Office was responsible for the operational management of both railways in 1933 . In 1944, both Winsen railway companies were incorporated into the East Hanoverian railways .

A special feature was the combined road / rail bridge at Nettelberg over the Ilmenau Canal, then a parallel road bridge was built in 1968, so that the bridge has only been used by the railway since then. In 1996 the line from Marschacht to Niedermarschacht was closed.

Most of the passenger trains were last driven as railcars. One of these was the DT 511 diesel multiple unit, which was built in 1934 by the Wismar wagon factory .

On May 21, 1966, passenger traffic was stopped.

Freight transport

Originally the traffic was oriented towards the countryside. From the 1960s onwards, industrial companies settled here, some of which are still hauliers today. The transfer points Fahrenholz and Mover on the Ilmenau Canal played a role in freight transport; they were closed in 1968 and 1958, but a new facility was built near Tönnhausen . Large quantities of mineral oil, diesel fuel and kerosene were handled here. Most of these facilities were dismantled in 2007; some of the tracks are used to park unused tank wagons or for shunting work while potash is being handled.

In addition to the agricultural goods and potash that are handled in Tönnhausen, chemicals are mainly transported in tank wagons to Marschacht . For this purpose, three scheduled freight trains will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in 2011. The OHE itself finally stopped freight traffic on its route at the 2013/14 timetable change. However, the Bruno Bock chemical factory in Niedermarschacht and the K + S potash warehouse in Tönnhausen are absolutely dependent on rail operations. The transports are now carried out by DB Schenker Rail from the Maschen marshalling yard . In 2019, Niedermarschacht will also be served three times a week.
