The Chanqah Baibars al-Jashankir

Al-Malik al-Muzaffar Rukn ad-Din Baibars II. ( Arabic بيبرس) († 1310 ) was Sultan of the Mamluks in Egypt from 1308 to 1309 . He belonged to the Bahri dynasty .

Baybars belonged since the end of the 13th century the most powerful emirs of the Mamelukes in Egypt. With Emir Salar, he carried out the second installation of al-Malik an-Nasir Muhammad as sultan. However, with Salar, he completely excluded the fourteen-year-old from the government, even after he had won a decisive victory against the Ilchane in 1303. Even if the Egyptian Bedouins were pacified after a massacre in 1306 , the empire found itself in a difficult situation after a severe earthquake (1303), campaigns by the Johanniter against the Nile Delta , Acre and Tartosa (1306) as well as internal power struggles of the Mamlukenemirs. In this situation an-Nasir withdrew from Cairo in 1308 to the Jordan area at the Kerak fortress and announced his abdication .

After the escape of the puppet, Baibars II was now appointed sultan. His government was overshadowed by crop failures and a severe famine in Egypt. In addition, an-Nasir cleverly used his abdication to ally himself with the Syrian Mamluks and Bedouin tribes. An-Nasir managed to return to Cairo and take power as early as 1309. Baibars was captured and executed in 1310.
