history
The place was named after James Britton Bailey , a veteran of the War of 1812, who came to the region with his wife and six children in 1818 and took over 4,500 acres of land with the consent of the then Spanish government in the area. Ownership was later challenged by Stephen F. Austin , but was reassigned on July 7, 1824. More settlers settled around the Bailey plantation. In 1839 the first parish was founded. Even today, most of the land is still owned by a few large ranchers, so there is little space for industry, which is reflected in the population. In 1972 there were 228 people, 410 in 1988 and 634 in 1990. 20% of today's residents are of German, 8% of Irish descent.
