The Bais Bay is a bay on the east coast of the island of Negros , in the province of Negros Occidental in the Philippines . It is a sea bulge in the southwest of the Tanon Strait . The Philippine city of Bais City lies on its coastline .

The Bais Bay is divided into a northern and southern bay. Both are separated by the Dewey / Dacu Island peninsula . The former islands silted up over time and merged to form the peninsula, but the names were retained. The southern Bais Bay covers an area of ​​65 km², in it is the port of Bais City and the island of Talabong. It is overgrown with mangroves and forms the core zone of the approx. 2.9 km² large nature reserve Talabong Mangrove Reserve . The Panamangan River flows into the southern bay and extensive mud flats lie in the northern area. The water in the bay is known as brackish water , the salinity of the water is given as 28 to 33 ppt.

The mangrove forests in the bay cover an area of 264 hectares, they have a wide variety of species, and include, among others, the Rhizophora apiculata , Rhizophora mucronata , Rhizophora stylosa , Bruguiera cylindrica , Bruguiera gymnorrhiza , Bruguiera sexangula , Ceriops decandra , Ceriops tagal , Avicennia lanata , Avicennia marina , Avicennia officinalis . Seagrass meadows cover an area of ​​200 hectares and coral reefs cover an area of ​​56.85 hectares.

Rare marine mammals such as the small sperm whale ( Kogia simus ) and the broad-billed dolphin ( Peponocephala electra ) can be seen in Bais Bay . A total of 99 species of fish from 22 species were registered in the bay .

The bay has a tropical and humid climate with a dry season from December to April, the rest of the year sometimes heavy rainfall .
