Bala-Ishem , also Balla-Ischem or Balaischem , is a small settlement 12 km southeast of Balkanabat in the Balkan Province in Western Turkmenistan .
In Bala-Ischem, a Trans-Caspian Railway station opened in 1885 . The station was also the starting point of the 32.5 km long Decauville horse-drawn tram on Naphthaberg with a track width of 500 mm, which was operated around 1885-1889.
The Great Balkan Mountains (Turkmen Uly Balkan, formerly Great Baichan ) are north of the settlement.
