The name goes back to the two villages Bala and Cynwyd , which are perceived as a cohesive settlement due to heavy building activity. The town is best known for the Bala Cynwyd Shopping Center and the Bala and Cynwyd train stations . The two localities were founded by Welsh Quakers in the 1680s , hence the names. The community's most famous son is former US Secretary of State Alexander Haig .

The village is located directly on the western city limits of Philadelphia on the old country road to Lancaster , the border being marked in the southeast by City Avenue and in the northeast by Schuylkill . The old town center of Cynwyd is about a kilometer northwest of City Avenue.

The former Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) runs through the village to Reading . The two stations on the route, Bala on the city limits and Cynwyd about one kilometer to the northwest, are served by the R6 line of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). This route was abandoned after the bankruptcy of the PRR in 1970 beyond Manayunk a few kilometers further northwest in favor of the parallel route of the previously competing Reading , so that Cynwyd is the final stop for all trains.
