history

In 1640 the Balfour family acquired the Balbirnie estate . In the middle of the 18th century there was a tower house on the site . The basis of the gardens had also already been laid out at this time. Under Robert Balfour, 6th of Balbirnie , today's Balbirnie House was built in 1815 to a design by the Scottish architect Richard Crichton . The gardens and parks also got their present appearance at this time. His son and heir John continued to develop the property between 1849 and 1875. Until the 1930s, the Balfour family operated coal mining around Balbirnie House and lived in the manor house. In 1969 the Glenrothes Development Corporation bought the property. It gave the public access to the parks. In 1980 a golf course was created within the park. Balbirnie House has served as a hotel since 1990.
