Baldobertus

Baldobertus , Baldebertus and in literature also Baldebert (mentioned from 749; † 762 ), was a bishop of Basel .

Baldobertus appears in second place in the oldest known list of bishops from the Münster Abbey in Alsace under Pope Zacharias (741-752). In 749 he was the first witness to sign a document from Bishop Heddo of Strasbourg. In 751 he was appointed abbot of the Murbach Monastery and is attested several times in this capacity, but continued to serve as Bishop of Basel. In 762 he signed the Book of the Dead of the Synod of Attigny as Baldeberthus episcopus civitas Baselae . Research has also considered that Baldobertus held the office of bishop in Basel before Walaus , who appears first in the list of bishops from the Münster monastery, and thus was perhaps the first bishop of Basel after the reestablishment of the diocese under the Carolingians. At least the borders of the diocese, which essentially remained valid for over a millennium, were probably drawn at this time.
