Walaus

Walaus (around 740?) Was a bishop of Basel .

Walaus opens the oldest known list of bishops from the Münster Abbey in Alsace as archiepiscopus under Pope Gregory III. (731-741). Its function as Basel bishop is controversial, however, since Basel belonged to the Archdiocese of Besançon and was never the seat of an archbishop . However, the title archiepiscopus has already been interpreted in research in the sense of an award as the founder of the diocese. Christian Wilsdorf doubts the term of office and equates Walaus with Walachus vocatus episcopus , who appears in 778 as a witness on a document of Bishop Remigius of Strasbourg without any indication of origin . According to this, Walaus should have followed Baldobertus , who appears in second place on the aforementioned list of bishops, and not preceded it.
