from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baldwin I , called the Brave , (* before 1190; † between April 23, 1246 and May 9, 1248) was Count of Bentheim and Burgrave of Utrecht .

He was the son of Otto I von Holland-Bentheim († around 1207), Count von Bentheim, from a branch line of the Counts of Holland ( Gerulfinger ), and his first wife Alverada von Arnsberg from the Cuyk family .

When his father died, Baldwin succeeded him as Count von Bentheim. He was a supporter of the Guelphs and became Vogt of Wietmarschen and Werseloe . He worked closely with his cousin, the Dutch Count Wilhelm I , and after his death in 1222 temporarily became the Dutch co-regent for Wilhelm's underage son Florens IV.

From 1217 to 1219 he took part in the Fifth Crusade .

As the burgrave of Utrecht he was drawn into the episcopal problems and feuds with the Frisians and the burgrave of Coevorden . He was captured in the Battle of Ane in 1227.

Baldwin is mentioned for the last time in a document in 1246; In 1248 his son Otto (II) had inherited him as Count von Bentheim.

He had four children with his wife named Jutta:
