Florens IV (Holland)

Florens (Floris) IV of Holland-Zealand (* June 24, 1210 , † July 13, 1234 ) was Count of Holland and Zeeland .

Life

He was the son of Count Wilhelm I (* 1174; † February 4, 1222) and Adelheid von Geldern (* 1180).

Florens IV succeeded his father in 1222 under the tutelage of his uncles. In a few battles he recaptured the Zeeland area from Flanders and, for a short time, also the so-called Reichs Flanders . For Zealand, however, he had to continue to recognize the sovereignty of Flanders.

During his reign, the first document in Dutch appeared in Holland in 1229 .

He helped the Archbishop of Bremen against the Stedinger farmers . So he fought in 1234 in the battle of Altenesch . Shortly after this battle, a tournament was held in Noyon / Corbie to celebrate the victory . He fell against his tournament opponent, Count Philipp von Clermont , who also fell.

Marriage and offspring

In 1224 he married Mathilde von Brabant (* 1195; † December 21, 1267), daughter of Duke Heinrich I and widow of the Guelph Count Palatine Heinrich II. Near Rhine († 1214).
