Baldwin Zettl

Baldwin Zettl (born September 29, 1943 in Falkenau an der Eger , today Sokolov) is a German graphic artist and engraver . Zettl lives and works in Freiberg (Saxony) .

Life

Zettl's father was a sculptor. After his death and his mother's illness, Zettl grew up with foster parents in Hildburghausen. From 1961 to 1964 he learned the trade of commercial advertising and studied from 1964 to 1969 with Werner Tübke , Gerhard Kurt Müller and Rolf Kuhrt at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art . Diploma with copperplate engravings for Isaak Babel's Die Reiterarmee and Theodor Storm's Der Schimmelreiter . Zettl has been working as a freelancer since 1969.

The extensive works of Zettl are mainly copperplate engravings. Drawings that he likes to make as silver pen drawings are rarer. Zettl does without color. He nuanced with nuances in the technique of copper engraving. Exceptions are prints in white on black paper or sheets of red chalk . The vast majority of his work interprets great literature from the 19th and early 20th centuries (including Goethe, Heinrich von Kleist , Georg Büchner , Heinrich Heine , Theodor Storm , Lion Feuchtwanger , Bertolt Brecht ). This made him one of the most popular book illustrators in the GDR. Zettl's works can be found in all major collections at home and abroad.
