The place Baleal is located about 80 km north of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, as the crow flies, near the small town of Peniche . Baleal can be reached by car via the Autoestradas do Atlântico and the IP6 motorway slip road. It takes about 80 minutes from Lisbon Airport. Part of the village lies on a peninsula that is connected to the mainland by a navigable dam.
There is a tiny harbor in a sheltered bay on the peninsula. In the immediate vicinity of Baleal and Peniche are some of the best surfing spots in Portugal. The area became a popular meeting place for surfers not only from Portugal. Since October 2009, the world's elite surfers have been visiting the beaches of Peniche , Baleal and Ferrel on their 10-stop world tour . The place Ferrel connects directly to Baleal. In the sea between Baleal and Ferrel, the "WaveRoller" wave power plant has been located since 2012 - just a few meters from the beach .
