Balladonia

Balladonia is a small town on the Eyre Highway in Western Australia . The place is 192 kilometers from Norseman and 518 kilometers from Eucla . It is important today because it is the only stopping point on the way through the Nullarbor Desert towards the town of Norseman and at the same time the end or starting point of the 146.6 kilometers longest curvilinear road in Australia to Caiguna on the Eyre Highway.

Balladonia basically consists of the staff of the Balladonia Roadhouse . The place bears a name from the Aboriginal language and means big rock. The area was settled in 1879 and the first place was 28 kilometers from today's Balladonia. A telegraph station was there from 1897 to 1929 connecting Perth and Adelaide . The ruin is located east of Balladonia. The Balladonia Roadhouse with a pub and motel is located in the village. 14 kilometers from the village is the Afghan Rocks , which is named after the nationality of a camel driver. This was shot by travelers dying of thirst.

In July 1979, Balladonia came into the focus of the global public when parts of the Skylab station crashed in the area in the early hours of the morning without injuring anyone. Some of the parts can be viewed in an exhibition in the Balladonia Roadhouse .

50 kilometers from Balladonia is the Newman Rocks , where wild donkeys, emus and kangaroos can be seen on a water source . A campsite can be used there for overnight stays.
