Ballia ( Hindi : बलिया , Urdu : بليا; Baliyā , [ ˈbʌlɪja ]) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 104,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
It is located around 150 kilometers northeast of Varanasi in the east of Uttar Pradesh on the northern bank of the Ganges , which marks the border with the neighboring state of Bihar . The city is the administrative seat of the Ballia district .
Local tradition derives the name Ballia from the poet Valmiki , the mythical author of the Ramayana epic. A derivation from the Hindi word for "sand" ( bālū ) is also considered possible . Ballia was originally located directly on the banks of the Ganges, but the erosion of the river bank destroyed almost the entire city at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, Ballia was moved around two kilometers north in 1900.
