The Baltoro Kangri (right), next to it Gasherbrum VI, VII and IV |
The Baltoro Kangri (main peak Baltoro Kangri III ) is a 7312 m (according to other sources 7265 m ) high mountain in the Karakoram in the autonomous region of Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan .
location
It lies south of the Gasherbrums and east of the Chogolisa ( 7668 m ) and, like the latter, belongs to the Masherbrum Mountains . The Upper Baltoro Glacier rises on the western flank of the Baltoro Kangri. To the north and east of the mountain, between the Baltoro Kangri and the Gasherbrums, is the Abruzzi Glacier , which shortly afterwards flows into the Upper Baltoro Glacier. The Baltoro Kangri is connected by a ridge to the Sia Kangri in the east - and thus to the Karakoram main chain - on which the Conway Saddle ( 6044 m ) is the lowest point . Between Baltoro Kangri and Chogolisa below the southern flank is the 6,180 m high Kondus saddle .
Seen from Concordiaplatz , the Baltoro Kangri towers over the Upper Baltoro Glacier, which is why it used to be called the Golden Throne , which goes back to William Martin Conway .
Ascent history
The Baltoro Kangri was first climbed by a Japanese expedition in 1963. The ascent route led over the Conway saddle. On August 4th, Takeo Shibata and Masaru Kono as well as Sumio Shima and Keiko Fujimoto reached the main summit.
Minor peaks
In addition to the main peak, the Baltoro III , the Baltoro Kangri has four other peaks (the peaks are numbered in ascending order from west to east): Baltoro Kangri I ( 7274 m ⊙ ), Baltoro Kangri II ( 7270 m ⊙ ), Baltoro Kangri IV ( 7265 m ⊙ ), Baltoro Kangri V ( 7275 m ⊙ ). Another sub-peak is Pioneer Peak ( ⊙ ) , located to the west, 6501 m high .
