description

The bamboo parrot finch reaches a body length of up to eleven centimeters. It weighs an average of 14 grams. In the males, the top of the head, neck, back, wing covers and tail feathers on the upper side of the body are moss green. The forehead, on the other hand, is black and turquoise blue. The throat, cheeks, chest, abdomen and the two tail covers are ocher brown. The eyes are large and dark brown in color. The feet are light flesh-colored. The beak is black. The females differ from the males by a slightly developed and brownish instead of black headband. The blue of the front parting is more dull and less extensive than that of the male.

Young birds are much more dull than the adult birds. They lack the blue on their foreheads and their beak is yellowish with a black tip.

Distribution and way of life

The distribution area of the bamboo parrot finch is the highlands of Malaysia , Java , Borneo , Sulawesi , the north of the Philippines island of Luzon , Mindoro and the Lesser Sunda Islands Lombok , Sumbawa and Flores . Their habitat are bamboo stocks and the edge of the rainforest. They live there in pairs or in small groups. It usually occurs at higher altitudes and reaches an altitude of over 2,000 meters on Java. On Sulawesi it can even be seen at heights of 3,500 meters. It feeds on bamboo and grass seeds, green parts of plants and berries.

There are no reports from field observations on the breeding behavior and reproduction. After the nest has been found, it breeds in Flores in May and June and thus in the dry season. The clutch of bamboo parrots consists of three to six eggs. They are incubated alternately by both parent birds for 14 days. The young leave the nest after a nestling period of 23 to 26 days. They will be looked after by the parent birds for another two weeks.

attitude

The first owner in Germany was the Berlin Zoological Garden in the 1930s. After this initial import, it was absent from the bird trade for decades and only returned to Europe in 1965. It is now being reared in small numbers, but captive breeding over several generations has so far remained an exception.
