Baník Sokolov is a Czech football club from Sokolov in northwestern Bohemia . Since the 2006/07 season the club has played in the second Czech division .

Club history

Baník Sokolov was founded in 1948 as SK HDB Falknov nad Ohří. In the same year the town of Falknov nad Ohří, German Falkenau an der Eger, was renamed Sokolov. In November 1948 the club was renamed ZTS Sokol HDB Sokolov.

From 1951 Sokol HDB Sokolov played in the then second-class so-called Krajská soutěž . More than 200 clubs played there in 20 seasons. Sokol HDB Sokolov immediately won his group in 1951, but this success was not associated with promotion to the 1st Czechoslovak league.

In 1953 the club changed its name to Baník Sokolov, at the same time it came to the introduction of a 2nd league, whereby the Krajská soutěž and thus also Sokolov was only third class. Just one year later, Czechoslovak football was reorganized again. Six seasons of Oblastní soutěž replaced the 21 seasons of Krajská soutěž as the third highest division. The football association reversed this reorganization in 1960, but from now on Krajská soutěž only had eleven seasons.

In 1965, six seasons of Divize replaced the Krajská soutěž as the third highest league, Sokolov was runner-up in Group A in the 1965/66 season. Four years later, the Football Association introduced a third division consisting of three seasons. Baník Sokolov was only penultimate in the group and, after 27 years in third class, had to move into the only fourth class Divize .

The return to the 3rd division succeeded Baník in the 1971/72 season. In the 1975/76 season, the team was relegated, but benefited in the following season from the dissolution of the previous nationwide 2nd division, so that the ČNL, in which Sokolov rose from the fourth-class Divize , was the second highest division. As the bottom of the table, however, the team rose again immediately.

In the 1979/80 season, the team even rose from the Divize and disappeared in the lower-class amateur football. It was not until 2001/02 that Baník Sokolov was promoted to the fifth class "Karlovarský přebor". The team won it sovereignly in 2004/05 and was back in national amateur football after 25 years of absence. As a newcomer to Divize B , Sokolov was runner-up.

In 2006 the association was converted into a joint stock company, the mining company Sokolovská uhelná became the sole shareholder . FK Baník Sokolov acquired the second division license from FK AS Pardubice in the summer of 2006 . The first professional season in the club's history ended Baník Sokolov in sixth place. Since then, the FK has held the class every year.
