Banana split (from English banana split , "split banana") is an ice cream that comes from the US kitchen .

In the classic preparation, it consists of a peeled banana , sliced lengthways , with balls of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream placed on top , over which pineapple syrup , chocolate sauce and strawberry syrup is poured , and finally nut slivers , whipped cream and maraschino cherries . Banana split is served on an elongated plate called a “boat”.

A common, simpler variant that is predominantly offered in German-speaking countries consists of banana, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

history

The exact authorship of the banana split is unclear.

The town of Latrobe , Pennsylvania, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the invention of the banana split in 2004. It is there that the student David E. Strickler, who worked in a drugstore as a soda jerk ( lemonade mixer ), is said to have invented this sundae in 1904. In Michaels Turback's The Banana Split Book , Strickler is credited with inventing the banana split .

A year or two after Strickler's invention, a Boston entrepreneur is said to have offered a similar sundae - albeit initially with unpeeled bananas.

Wilmington , Ohio , also claims to be the birthplace of the banana split. The restaurant owner Ernest Hazard will among his employees have organized the invention of a new sundae a competition in order to keep the students of the city during the long winter days happy. Dissatisfied with the result, he put a halved banana on an oblong plate and invented a dessert himself. Wilmington hosts a banana split festival every June.

The popularization of the banana split is attributed to the Walgreens grocery chain . Charles Walgreen copied the dessert and made it one of the trademarks of the drugstores he founded in Chicago .

The fast food chain Dairy Queen alone sells more than 25 million banana splits every year.

In Germany, banana split became known through ice cream parlors , especially after the Second World War , and is part of the standard offer there.
