The Banca di Sassari SpA is an Italian universal bank whose business area mainly in the region of Sardinia lies. The Sassari- based company has a total of 58 branches, 56 of which are in Sardinia, and employs more than 560 people. The Banca di Sassari has been a subsidiary of the Banco di Sardegna since 1993 and has been part of the Banca popolare dell'Emilia Romagna since 2000 .
history
The bank was founded in 1888 by 58 entrepreneurs from Sassari as Banca Cooperativa fra Commercianti Società Anonima . The purpose of the cooperative bank was to make loans available to its members and to finance them through the savings business .
In 1925 the institute joined the Italian Association of People's Banks and changed its name to Banca Popolare Cooperativa Anonima di Sassari . The first branches were opened from 1938, first in the province of Sassari and from 1947, with the opening of a branch in Cagliari , also in other parts of the island. In 1948 the bank name was shortened to Banca Popolare di Sassari .
After the banking institute had grown into a bank that was established beyond the province of Sassari in the post-war years, it experienced a strong growth spurt in the 1980s with a rapidly increasing business volume and the expansion of the branch network to 34 locations. However, the expansion turned out to be too ambitious and put the bank in financial difficulties during the economic crisis of the early 1990s. The bank was then temporarily administered for around 18 months from October 1991.
Following this phase, the business activities were in June 1993 under the form of a public limited company newly formed Banca di Sassari SpA continued under the roof of the Banco di Sardegna. Under the leadership of a new management, the Banca di Sassari was brought back on a stable and profitable basis.
