The Banco di Sardegna SpA is an Italian universal bank whose business area mainly in the region of Sardinia lies. It has its legal seat in Cagliari and its administrative seat in Sassari . Banco di Sardegna has a total of 374 branches, 346 of which are in Sardinia, and employs more than 2300 people.
The banking institute was founded in 1953 with the aim of doing savings and lending for the Sardinian economy . In 1992 the institute, which had been run as a public institution , was converted into a stock corporation and privatized. The private foundation Fondazione Banco di Sardegna was created as the owner . The following year, the Banco di Sardegna took over the Banca di Sassari .
In 2000, the Fondazione Banco di Sardegna transferred the majority of shares in the Banco di Sardegna to the Banca popolare dell'Emilia Romagna . Since then, this has held 51 percent of the ordinary shares , the remaining 49 percent continues to be held by the foundation. The preferred shares of Banco di Sardegna, which make up 12.75 percent of the total share capital, are listed on the Italian stock exchange.
