Banda da Armada

The Banda da Armada Portuguesa is the military music orchestra of the Portuguese Navy .

history

Already in the records of Vasco da Gama's sea ​​voyages at the end of the 15th century, a music formation of the naval forces is mentioned. A regular “music group” or “musicians' train” in the royal navy (“Armada Real”) has been documented since 1740, at that time called Charamela (from “Charamel”, German shawm ). The Banda da Armada Portuguesa accompanied the Portuguese court in 1807 when they moved to Rio de Janeiro , on the run from the Napoleonic invasion. Back in Portugal since 1821, the unit consisted of 20 musicians in 1840.

When the British King Edward VII visited Portugal in 1903, a group of technicians from The Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd. accompanied him . of London . In 1922, the Banda da Armada Portuguesa returned to Rio, where they took part in the celebrations for Brazil's 100th Independence Day, accompanied by the Portuguese President António José de Almeida .

Since then, the Banda da Armada Portuguesa has performed repeatedly at international festivals, such as the International Military Band Festival in Paris in 1982, the XI. Military Band Festival in Portugal in 1988, the V International Military Music Festival in Châteaudun in 1992 and the XII. 1994 Norfolk International Festival in the USA. Under the direction of frigate captain Carlos da Silva Ribeiro, she made a guest appearance at the 44th Music Show of Nations 2008 in Bremen.

The Banda da Armada Portuguesa is assigned to the cultural department of the Navy, the Comissão Cultural da Marinha (CCM), as well as z. B. the central naval library or the naval museum Museu de Marinha . The CCM reports directly to the Chief of Staff of the Naval Forces.
