history

The Schelfstadt, originally the Schelfe , since 1349 also Neustadt , has developed as an initially independent place since the 11th century. In 1705 it received city rights. A later building regulation prescribed the eaves and the height of the houses.

The three-storey, 12-axis historicizing building was designed for Mecklenburgische Wechsel- und Hypothekenbank

  • as the first eastern construction phase in 1904/06 according to plans by Wilhelm Marten , Berlin, who died in 1910, and
  • built as the second western construction phase in 1912 according to plans by Hans Jessen, Berlin, a student of Marten's.

A sandstone facade, which is rare in Schwerin and decorated with allegories between the first and second floors , has two lateral entrance risers and a striking cornice . The facade is structured by pilasters with Ionic capitals . At the main entrance in the area of the skylight there are two plastic figures (probably Hermes and Klio ). The large leaded glass window comes from the Schwerin workshop of R. C. Koenigsberg. The management rooms have design elements in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles , designed by the architect Hans Stoffers (Schwerin).

The bank merged with the Mecklenburgische Sparbank . In 1921 it became the Mecklenburgische Depositen- und Wechselbank . After 1945 the Landeskreditbank Mecklenburg took over the building; from 1989 the state bank of the GDR , which existed until 1990. At the beginning of the 1990s, the Deutsche Bank , to which Mecklenburgische Depositen- und Wechselbank belonged before the Second World War , moved in.

The building was vacated in 1998 for a planned renovation. In 2020 it became known that after 22 years of vacancy, after a renovation for a hotel chain, a hotel with at least 100 rooms according to plans by Mecklenburg Consult will move into it.
