The Banter fishing village is a collection of mobile fishing huts on the Banter Sea dike in Wilhelmshaven .

history

The fishing village was established in 1908 after the construction of the new Banter sea dike to expand the war port to the south. Simple large families from the Banter workers' settlement mostly used to fish as a hobby in order to earn extra income or to meet the food needs of the often large families (5–10 children). The initially simple wooden huts with coal stoves served as a starting point for fishing with small rowing boats on the Jade Bay . In addition, you put traps for the lobster fisheries in the tidal creeks of the upstream Watts . They were slaughtered and boiled, fried and smoked immediately after the catch.

During the dike heightening work in 1982, the fishing huts, which were originally firmly anchored in the foot of the dike, had to give way for reasons of dike safety and were demolished. Instead of fixed fishing huts, paved parking spaces were integrated into the dike, on which today's mobile fishing huts stand during the season from April to October. These pitches cannot officially be rented because they are passed on from generation to generation within the owner families. In the meantime, however, the places are also offered to interested people via the board of the association "Interest group of sport fishermen eV". Since the 1980s, the village has only existed during the summer months, because dike protection now has priority in the local protection zone 1 of the Wadden Sea National Park. In the remaining months, the mobile huts are pulled inside the dike and brought to safety. Currently, only four to six fishermen are still fishing with their boats.

Film set

In October 2013, the Banter fishing village was the film set for the ARD Tatort Kaltstart with the new Hamburg inspectors Thorsten Falke ( Wotan Wilke Möhring ), Katharina Lorenz ( Petra Schmidt-Schaller ) and Jan Katz ( Sebastian Schipper ). According to the script, two police officers and a human trafficker are killed in a gas explosion in a replica fisherman's hut. The trail leads the investigators through Wilhelmshaven and especially into the area around the new JadeWeserPort container terminal . On the occasion of the crime scene filming, the fishermen's huts were allowed to stand outside the dike for around 4 weeks longer than usual.
