occupation

Kaltstart is an episode of the 2014 crime series crime series Tatort . The film was produced for Norddeutscher Rundfunk and broadcast on television for the first time on April 27, 2014. It is the third case of the Hamburg chief inspectors Falke and Lorenz and the 909th crime scene episode.

Chief Inspector Thorsten Falke and Inspector Katharina Lorenz switch from the criminal police to the federal police (BPOL), which until 2005 was still called the Federal Border Police .

action

During a SEK operation in the container port of Wilhelmshaven suddenly the fishing hut of the suspect Mike Dürr explodes. In addition to the resident who was to be convicted of trafficking in human beings , two police officers also die. The action continues anyway and, as suspected, there are foreign refugees in a container. These are released and handed over to the German authorities.

Although the previous detectives Thorsten Falke and Katharina Lorenz were not due to switch to the Federal Police for four weeks, they are already being introduced to the new employees due to the explosive situation in the port. Falke was happy to see his colleague Rita Kovic there again; but he is shocked to learn that she perished in the gas explosion. So he is pleasantly surprised to meet his formerly best known friend, Chief Detective Jan Katz, at the scene of the accident. The next day, when Katharina Lorenz found the detonator of the explosion, it was clear that someone wanted to purposefully eliminate the smuggler .

In the vicinity of Mike Dürr, the loadmaster Martinsen is suspected of belonging to the Schleuserring. Obviously, the work in the container port is no longer generating enough profit to make ends meet, so that he got involved in this illegal activity. While Falke is investigating in this direction, Lorenz tries to find out something from the refugees about the people behind the smuggling ring. However, they are all closed and ignorant. Meanwhile, Katz finds out that the freight forwarder Dreyer fell for Mike Dürr's promise when he had promised him a prosperous future through the growth of the container port. Since this did not happen, he is now on the verge of bankruptcy and has every reason to hate Dürr. Despite this strong motive, he apparently has a waterproof alibi because, according to the newspaper report, he had carried out a chaining action at the same time. Falke's new colleagues, above all Gerd Carsten, checked the slaughterhouse at the same time, where refugees with false passports had already worked at dumping wages in the past . There is a direct connection between the smuggler Dürr and the slaughterhouse operator, who, however, can also show an alibi and is therefore out of the question for the murder attack.

To gain access to possibly via the pass counterfeiters to the smuggling ring, federal police working with a undercover investigators together. This is how Falke and Lorenz manage to get to the suspect's laptop, but before they can evaluate the data, Lorenz is stolen from the car at the gas station. Behind this action is Hermann Jertz, a former security officer, with his henchman Jérome Mdanga from the Congo , whom Lorenz saw briefly. His facial scar takes the investigation further.

Falke is talking to the head of operations of the SEK, who has been injured in the hospital since the explosion. He thinks it is possible that Dürr with his multiple extra actions could have got into the enclosure of a larger gang of smugglers, which is why they removed him by explosion. But according to Falke's research, more points to an arms dealer ring . This suspicion is reinforced when the shipping agent Dreyer was found hanged the next day and a confession was found on his tablet that he was responsible for the deaths of Dürr and the two police officers. According to Falke's hypothesis, this is only intended to distract from the lead to the actual perpetrators.

The inspection of all motorcycles with African owners leads him to the address of a remote villa, where he meets Hermann Jertz, who is in the process of removing all traces of his and Jérome Mdanga's presence. He poses as a broker to Falke and Lorenz, but Falke doesn't believe him. But he pretends to be able to shadow him in a chase. When the persecuted man suddenly cannot be found, Falke and Lorenz again have the impression that their whereabouts could be constantly monitored and known despite driving a car. But what size of opponent can such expensive and advanced technology afford? Secret Service or Organized Crime?

With the help of his license plate number, they can identify the persecuted person. Assuming that he will want to leave with a ship, they intercept him at the port. Jertz wants to continue to flee, but is caught by Falke. So that he does not get into the hands of the police alive, he is blinded by a surveillance drone that is actually active all the time so that Falke not only survives the exchange of fire, but shoots Jertz. This, however, eliminates the only witness who could lead Falke and his colleagues to the arms dealers ring.

It remains to be seen where the real backers are, who have been monitoring everything unnoticed with the drone the whole time.

background

The shooting took place from October to December 2013 against the backdrop of the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven , Germany's only deep water port. Cinecentrum Hannover produced the film on behalf of NDR . The scenes of the exploding fisherman's hut were filmed south of the Bant district in the Banter fishing village .

After the last episode with Falke and Lorenz, it was decided to transfer her to the Federal Police, as she was not to be left as a Hamburg investigator with Til Schweiger. (That is why Falke was “ parked ” in an episode on Langeoog .) The variant with the Federal Police opens up completely new possibilities for the characters, so that they can work as a member of a mobile search unit (MFE) and deal with criminals operating nationwide. For the first time, the most modern observation and tracking instruments are being used.

Audience rating

The first broadcast of Kaltstart on April 27, 2014 reached 9.57 million viewers in Germany and a market share of 26.6 percent for Das Erste .

criticism

At Spiegel Online , Christian Buß judges : “Although the plot is difficult to understand over some stretches, the perpetrators, who follow what is happening in the background on large screens, remain vague, and there are also some criminal absurdities. There is a disturbing, confident imagery for this. "

Holger Gertz ( Sueddeutsche.de ) appreciates: “This crime scene is a festival for people who like it when tension and beauty come together in speaking images. [...] The music in this 'crime scene' feels like raindrops wandering along the window panes. Snapshots full of atmosphere, not a word in the wrong place. [Only point of criticism:] Unfortunately, the story is completely lost behind the beautiful pictures, it cannot cope with its own burden. "

Focus Online judges: “For the first time in 44 years of 'Tatort' history, a team is switching from the State Criminal Police Office to a mobile search unit of the Federal Police. This move makes it possible to tell a story with 'Kaltstart', which begins with the death of two police officers and a human trafficker in Jade-Weser-Port, but develops into an extremely exciting thriller about organized crime.
