Baphomet was a German death and thrash metal band from Bietigheim , Baden-Württemberg that was founded in 1986 and disbanded in 1995.

history

The band was founded in 1986 and consisted of the singer Thomas Hertler, the guitarist Gernot Kerrer, the bassist Hansi Bieber and the drummer Manuel Reichert. Hertler was still doing his community service in 1990 . At that time employees of the southern German Intercord Record Service spurred him on to produce a record, but IRS itself was a pure sales company. That's why Torsten Hartmann took over the idea and founded Massacre Records , where Hertler joined after his community service and brought the debut album No Answers on the way. The first recordings had already been made on free weekends in a poorly equipped studio in Frankenthal (Palatinate) . The finished album was released in 1991. A year later, the second album Latest Jesus followed. After a club tour with Grave Digger , which drew older audiences who didn't know what to do with Baphomet, the band went on a tour of Germany with Cannibal Corpse . Due to the inexperience, Massacre Records had developed a lousy record cover , did not do any promotional work and chose the tour with the death metal spearhead inappropriately , as a band of the same name from the USA Cannibal Corpse emulated strongly and the fans had expected that US band. Further tour support and a quick album successor should make the painful experience forgotten. It was recorded in just seven days, and Massacre now employed a promotional employee who was solely responsible for this phonogram. At the time of the release of the 1994 album Trust , singer Hertler had already left the band. Hertler could still be heard as a singer. He was replaced by guitarist and singer Jens Sonnenberg ( Sacred Steel ), who stayed in the band until 1995, when the group broke up.

style

According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer, the band play unusual Thrash Metal on No Answers , whereby the vocals are reminiscent of Hardcore Punk . Due to the unusual sounding songs, Müller drew a comparison with Voivod . According to Müller, the band on Latest Jesus is much more Death Metal-heavy, which is especially noticeable in the vocals, the sound and the aggressiveness of the songs. For Chris Glaub from the Break Out it was rather the other way round; he attributed the technically mediocre debut with the characteristic "bleating" to Death Metal and the improved successor to Thrash Metal. According to Gregor Arndt from Metal Hammer, the band also play a technically clean mixture of Death and Thrash Metal on Trust , which can be located "somewhere in the unimportant between Voivod and various Death Metal influences". Horror Infernal editor Claudio Flunkert found that Baphomet had developed from Death Metal to Thrash Metal, and since Thrash Metal is more aggressive and varied, Trust is "by far the most aggressive work of the quintet".
