Barbagia di Ollolai

The Barbagia is a multi-indented rocky plateau south of Nuoro , in the east of Sardinia . It is divided from north to south into:

  • the Barbagia Ollolai
  • the Barbagia Mandrolisai
  • the Barbagia Belvi
  • the Barbagia Seulo

It is the land of the shepherds who graze their sheep and goats in the maquis . They live in the villages, some of which are built like bird nests on the mountains, in the still little developed wasteland between holm oaks and sweet chestnuts . In this part of the island, Sardinian is usually better understood than Italian .

The Gennargentu massif rises over 1,800 meters and forms the island's watershed. The name Gennargentu refers to the area's silver ore deposits. The "land of the barbarians" (as the Roman name suggests) is located in the province of Nuoro between Arborea , Baronia, Goceano and Ogliastra . One of the larger towns is Oliena , but the most famous is Orgosolo , which became famous beyond Italy for its wall paintings. At the height of Sardinian banditism , the Barbagia was the retreat for bandits and kidnappers. Bandits like Giovanni Corbeddu Salis , known as the “King of the Macchia”, achieved fame and prestige among the Sardinian population through their deeds. A grotto was even named after him.

European mouflons , wild horses and donkeys live in the Barbagia , and they pull the colorfully decorated carts during the parades during which the traditional costumes, which are symbolic of the Sardinians , are worn .

On the edge of the mountains, people of prehistoric times left their traces in the giant tombs of Bidistili , Marruscu and Madau , in the Is Paras nuraghi and in the nuragic settlement of S'Urbale . The area is also the center of the proliferation of the Sardinian menhirs .
