Barbara Hobom

Barbara Hobom (born Schnegg ; * 1940 in Cologne ) is a German science journalist .

Life

She studied genetics , biochemistry and microbiology in Munich and Berlin and was born on November 2, 1966 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the dissertation on the genetics of the resistance of F + strains against male-specific bacteriophages . Studies using the example of E. coli / phage fr. PhD . She then worked in basic research in molecular biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich , at Stanford University and at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . She has been working as a freelance science journalist since 1973 - primarily for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . Her publications, including several books, cover the fields of genetic engineering , biotechnology , developmental biology , biochemistry, virology , immunology and molecular biology. In the 1990s she also held a teaching position for science journalism at the Philipps University of Marburg .

She married Gerd Hobom , who had received his doctorate in Munich a year before her. He later became professor of molecular biology in Freiburg and at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and chairman of the Central Commission for Biosafety .

The Center for Biological Signaling Studies (BIOSS) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg awarded the Barbara Hobom Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, to promising young female scientists in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The award was given to excellent dissertations by doctoral students in the fields of synthetic biology , signal transduction and bioengineering .
