Barbara Schmidt (* 1966/1967) is a German doctor and virologist . Since 2012 she has been Professor of Infection Immunology at the University of Regensburg . Her research focuses on diagnostics , immunology and therapy resistance of the HI virus and AIDS as well as the innate antiviral immune system .

Career

Barbara Schmidt studied human medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg , where she received her doctorate in 1994. Afterwards she worked as a research assistant at the virological institute from 1995, where she researched the innate immune defense of plasmacytoid dendritic cells against certain types of HIV and the herpes simplex virus . From 2001 to 2002 she coordinated the National Reference Center for Retroviruses (former location: Erlangen ).

After a year and a half research stay at the University of California in San Francisco , she returned to Erlangen in 2004 and headed a working group at the university's Institute of Virology until 2012. At the same time, she was deputy head of the diagnostics section there for eight years.

In 2006 she completed her habilitation and in August 2012 she accepted an appointment as professor for infection immunology at the Institute for Microbiology and Hygiene at the University of Regensburg.

For her work on HIV, she was awarded the Science Prize for Clinical Virology from the German Association for Combating Viral Diseases and the Society for Virology in 2013 . Her research group was also at the Consortium for zoonotic Bornaviruses involved (ZooBoCo), which could prove that the virus not only the Borna disease can cause in animals, but also fatal brain inflammation in humans.

Barbara Schmidt is a member of various specialist societies. She is the deputy chairwoman of the Antiviral Therapy Commission of the Society for Virology.

In 2019 she was awarded the prize for good teaching by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art .
