Barbeau Peak or Barbeau Peak on Ellesmere Island is 2,616 meters above sea level the highest mountain in the Canadian territory of Nunavut . It is also the highest peak on the North American continent east of the Rocky Mountains as well as the British Empire Range and the Arctic Cordillera . The summit is about 43 km as the crow flies northwest of Lake Hazen .
The British mountaineer Geoffrey Hattersley-Smith (1923–2012) made the first ascent in 1967 , and it was not until 1981 that the mountain was climbed a second time. In 1969 it was named after the Canadian anthropologist Marius Barbeau .
