Barbeque 67

Barbeque 67 (other spelling: BAR-B-QUE 67 , also known as the Spalding Festival ) was a pop concert that took place on May 29, 1967 in Spalding , Lincolnshire , England .

Barbeque 67 is considered the first rock festival. It took place just under three weeks before the Monterey Pop Festival . Six of the leading rock and R&B groups of 1967 performed at the Tulip Bulb Action Hall from 4 p.m. to midnight . Entry was £ 1 . The estimated number of visitors was at least 4,000. The BBC spoke of 6,000 visitors and around 12,000 people outside the festival site. The concert was organized by Brian Thompson (1938–2011).

The bands

At the beginning two psychedelic rock bands played : Pink Floyd in the original line-up with Syd Barrett and The Move with Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne .

Then came two blues rock bands: Jimi Hendrix with his Experience and Cream .

With Zoot Money and His Big Roll Band as well as Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band it went towards rhythm and blues .

The band Sound Force 5 played as the opening act and during the renovation breaks.

aftermath

Barbeque 67 was one of the few occasions Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton played together. It was one of the events leading up to the Monterey Pop Festival that ushered in the era of great rock and pop festivals. The concert is sometimes referred to as "the world's first rock festival".

In its Christmas 2012 edition, the London Economist Group's “Intelligent Life” magazine selected Barbeque 67 as the winner in the “Sixties Rock Gig” category.

In 1968 Brian Thompson organized a follow-up concert in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire , Barbeque 68 , with Fairport Convention , Donovan , Fleetwood Mac and again The Move .
