The current place was probably founded in the course of new settlements during the medieval Reconquista . Thus, in the surveys of 1258, Barcel is listed as a locality of the Order of St. John the Hospital .

After that, Barcel remained a small town, in 1530 there were 23 residents. The parish church was built in the 17th century. In the registers of 1706, Barcel is listed as a municipality in the Lamas de Orelhão district. In 1796, Barcel had 176 inhabitants. After the administrative reforms at the beginning of the 19th century, Barcel became part of Mirandela County.

Since around 1950, the community has seen increased emigration , especially to France since the 1960s. The population decreased from 315 in 1960 to 126 in 2011.
