Marmelos is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal .
history
A small settlement existed here during Roman times .
The current place was probably founded in the course of the new settlements during the medieval Reconquista , probably in the 12th / 13th. Century by the Johanniter Hospital Order , which received this area.
Marmelos remained a municipality in the Lamas de Orelhão district until its dissolution in 1853. Since then, Marmelos has been a municipality in the Mirandela district.
From around 1940, the community recorded increased emigration , since the 1960s mainly to France. The population decreased from 605 in 1940 to 145 in 2011.
In the course of the regional reform in Portugal in 2013 , the municipality of Marmelos was dissolved and merged with Barcel and Valverde da Gestosa to form a new overall municipality.
Attractions
In addition to nature, which is accessible via hiking trails of the Mirandela district administration, there are some architectural monuments in Barcel:
- Povoado de São Martinho de Marmelos , archaeological site of a Roman settlement in Marmelos
- Igreja Paroquial de São Pedro de Vale do Conde , the Mannerist - Baroque - Neoclassical parish church of São Pedro de Vale do Conde from the 17th century.
- Igreja de São Gens , the parish church of Marmelos

Marmelos was the seat of a community of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Mirandela in the Bragança district . The community had 145 inhabitants and an area of 22.53 km² (as of June 30, 2011).
Two localities belonged to the municipality:
- Jams
- Sao Pedro de Vale do Conde
With the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Marelos, Barcel and Valverde da Gestosa were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Barcel, Marmelos e Valverde da Gestosa . Barcel became the seat of the new parish.
