Bard is the third studio album by the English progressive rock band Big Big Train . The CD was released in February 2002.

content

BBT break away from Neo-Prog on this CD and are now more part of Retro-Prog. Influences from Anthony Phillips and Steve Hackett can be heard. The songs are partly about difficult human relationships, others are based on the English story. In The Last English King z. B. told of King Harold , who first successfully fought the Battle of Stamford Bridge and was then defeated in the Battle of Hastings . The song Blacksmithing is a “Life Goes On” piece based on a 15th century poem called The Blacksmiths . There are four instrumental pieces included.

History of origin

Big Big Train were in a difficult phase after the release of the previous album English Boy Wonders . The success did not want to come. Steve Hughes, the drummer, joined The Enid and was briefly replaced by Pete Hibbit. The GEP label broke the contract with the band. Gregory Spawton and Andy Poole continued to write songs and built their own studio. Drummer Phil Hogg was involved in the recordings of Bard , as did Tony Müller and Martin Read again. The latter, however, decided to leave the band during the recording. At the end of the recording, Ian Cooper also rejoined the band. When the album was released, BBT announced that this would be the last publication. In retrospect, however, it turned out that the band had the potential to act independently of a larger label.

Reviews

In contrast to the previous album, Bard was noted and mostly positively discussed.

Bard was not supposed to be re-released, but this decision is being reconsidered.
