Far Skies Deep Time is the seventh studio production by the English retro-prog band Big Big Train . The EP was released in October 2010.

content

Far Skies Deep Time is a compilation of songs that are all very reminiscent of the Genesis of the 1970s. Stylistically purest retro prog. This is most evident in the first track Master of Time , a cover of an Anthony Phillips composition. This track was released as a demo version on the CD edition of Anthony Phillips' album The Geese & The Ghost . Big Big Train refined this demo into a classic prog song. At the reissue 2011 under the Russian MALS label, Master of Time was replaced by a new recording by Kingmaker due to licensing problems . Originally, Kingmaker appeared on the 1993 demo The Infant Hercules . The second piece, Fat Billy Shouts Mine - it is about William 'Fatty' Foulke in the lackluster beyond - was composed for the album The Underfall Yard , in which Martin Orford (ex- IQ ) is a guest musician. British Racing Green , the third track, tells the story of a breakup at Christmas time. Also Brambling is a kind of love song, a wistful look back at the first love. With its slightly jazzy guitar intermezzi, this song clearly stands out from the other four. The final long track The Wide Open Sea ( Jacques Brels fictional sailing trip in death) emphasizes once again the respect for and the influences of Genesis and is also a bow to Jacques Brel's life's work.

Reviews

“As a result, Far Skies Deep Time meets all expectations. It's a great album and my candidate for album of the year. Highest recommendation, really! "

- proggnosis.com

“Usually EPs are more for the real fanboys. This is not the case with "Far skies deep time". First-class, well-engineered material is on offer again, so anyone who already liked the predecessor "The Underfall Yard" simply has to hit it. "

- babyblaue-seiten.de

“The EP ends with the 17-minute The Wide Open Sea. It tells the story of the singer-songwriter Jacques Brel - and it's wonderful. If you like Ocean Cloud then you will like this too. But this is better. The lyrics are extraordinary - The sea is my blood, the rain and the sky are my eyes - and the music ... It's all from Big Big Train, but with a hint to Genesis, Marillion and Yes. "

"Absolutely beautiful music"

- liveprog.com

"This is the best album Genesis never made and it is one of the best releases of 2010."

- prognaut.com

“BBT are an interesting unit with top musicians in the background. In addition to the main songwriter Greg Spawton, David Longdon has now also signed up as a composer and he does so with flying colors. I am looking forward to further action from BBT. Great music, great bottom line. More of that!"

Trivia

With a playing time of over 40 minutes, this EP beats many an album. Big Big Train has nevertheless decided to release it as an EP in order not to give Far Skies Deep Time the status of the successor to The Underfall Yard . This is supposed to be English Electric .
