Barishal ( Bengali বরিশাল IAST Bariśāl ; also Barisal ) is a city in the south of Bangladesh , about 70 km away from the Bengali coast. The more than 328,000 inhabitants, is the seat of administration of the same division and the same district .

The Barishal, consisting of 30 wards (city districts), received an independent city authority (municipality) only in 1957.

geography

Barishal is located on the Ganges Delta , on a branch of the Kirtonkhola River . Due to the presence of water was Barishal of Kazi Nazrul Islam , the national poet of Bangladesh , Venice of the East called. Rivers such as Arialkhan , Tushkhali , Gabkhan, and Katcha flow through the Barishal area.

The distance to Dhaka is 275 km by car and 117 km by boat.

education

With the Brajamohan College , one of the oldest universities in Bangladesh is located in Barishal. In 2001 the college offered honors degrees in 18 subjects and masters degrees in 16 subjects.
