Barney 2004

Barney Bush (born on 30th September 2000 in New Jersey as Bernard Bush , died on 1. February 2013 in Texas ) was a male Scottish Terrier . He became known as the pet of George W. Bush and Laura Bush during Bush's tenure as President of the United States and was often referred to as the "First Dog."

Origin and life

Barney's mother, Coors, belonged to Christine Todd Whitman , former director of the Environmental Protection Agency and governor of New Jersey from 1993 to 2000. Miss Beazley , another Scottish terrier in the Bush household, was Barney's niece.

During Bush's tenure, Barney lived in the White House . It was presented to the US public via its own website, and from Christmas 2002 to 2008 so-called Barney cam videos with Barney as the leading actor were released.

Barney died on February 1, 2013 of lymphatic cancer . He was 12 years old. In the library of the George W. Bush Presidential Center is a bronze sculpture of Barney and Miss Beazley, who died a year later.

Public perception

Barney is part of a famous quote from Bob Woodward about the Iraq war , which he repeated in 60 Minutes in his book The Power of Displacement - George W. Bush, the White House and Iraq - State of Denial :

"I will not leave, even if only (wife) Laura and (dog) Barney support me"

- George W. Bush after Bob Woodward

Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced his Labrador Koni Barney on a state visit to Bush. Putin expressed disrespect in the run-up to the size of the dog, which was not appropriate for the leader of a world power, and after the state visit emphasized how Koni was superior to Barney.

Satirical contributions have appeared in The Onion newspaper , which portrayed a fictional visit to US troops in Iraq, in the satirical show The Daily Show , which was ridiculed over the Christmas videos, and in The Bugle.

On November 6, 2008, Barney Reuters reporter bit Jon Decker's finger. A similar incident occurred on September 19, 2008 when Barney bit Heather Walker, the public relations manager for the Boston Celtics . The incident was only known after the elections .
