Barnim II (* around 1275 ; † May 28 or June 26, 1295 ) was a Duke of Pomerania.

Life

Barnim II was a son of Duke Barnim I and his third wife Mechthild of Brandenburg. When his father Barnim I died in 1278, he was still a toddler.

For him and his younger brother Otto I , his older half-brother Bogislaw IV led the government. Mechthild had to protect her two sons from the half-brother. For the first time in 1294 Barnim II and Otto I carried out independent governmental acts. Barnim II died on May 28 or June 26, 1295 (tradition is inconsistent). A story about his murder in the Ueckermünder Heide by a betrayed husband has been proven to be fabulous; possibly its core is based on a violent death of Barnim.

Barnim II left no descendants. After his death, Bogislaw IV and Otto I divided the country.

Monuments in the Ueckermünder Heide

In the Ueckermünder Heide near the village of Hintersee on the road from Ueckermünde to Stettin there is the so-called Barnim Cross and a memorial stone. The two monuments stand at the point where Barnim II is said to have been stabbed to death by the knight Vidanz Muckerwitz from Vogelsang, according to legend in 1295 .
