The von Muckerwitz family , or Mukerviz or Mokerwyz in older writings , was a noble Pomeranian family that died out in the 16th century.

history

1294 first appeared a squire Andreas Mukervitse as a witness in a deed of grasping Dukes Barnim II. And Otto I to, in this city of Wollin confirmed the city and jurisdiction. It is possible that the family originated on the island of Wollin , as the place name Mukriz ( large and small Mokratz ) suggests. However, only the possession of a fish weir in the Salwerke stream near Dartzvitze ( Darsewitz ) can be proven by a document from 1324 for the cousins Conrad and Tymmo Mukrauitze . In the same document, which was issued in Ziegenort , the two appeared as owners of the places Laatzig and Paatzig as well as parts of Sarnow and Lanke east of the Dievenow and as the holder of the fishing rights on the Martenthiner See and parts of the Szczecin Lagoon . In the area between the confluence of the Uecker and Neuwarper See in the north of the Ueckermünder Heide , the Muckervitz and Bröker families appeared for the first time as part owners of the towns of Bellin, Damgarten and Warsin .

In 1410 Henning Colze Mukerkvitze tho Murauitze ( Moratz ) attested to a document. In 1428 Scire and Slaweke Mukervitcze were accepted into the brotherhood of the Dominican monastery at Cammin , which they allowed to cut wood in the heather near Moratz.

In 1449, Duke Joachim left the bailiwick and Ueckermünde Castle to Bernd Mukerviz on “Castle Beliefs ”. In 1454 Bernd Mukerviz bought it from Duke Wartislaw IX. Alt- Torgelow Castle with the bailiwick and associated goods for 3,000 Rhenish guilders . In 1456, Duke Wartislaw X. confirmed that fishing with the large yarn on the part of the lagoon belonging to Ueckermünde, as it had already been granted to him by Joachim, was a hereditary privilege. Duke Otto III. 1458 granted him the exemption from the jurisdiction of the castle judges with the exception of criminal cases.

With Bernd Muckerwitz († May 8, 1575), the male line died out. The Muckerwitz fiefs were withdrawn from the Pomeranian dukes.

legend

Johannes Bugenhagen and Thomas Kantzow already mention a noble knight Vidante Mukerwiz , who is said to have sat at Vogelsang around 1290. He is said to have stabbed Duke Barnim II near Hintersee in 1295 and buried his wife alive after he had met both of them in adultery. The so-called Barnim Cross is said to have been erected at the place where the duke died.

The connection between the possibly violent death of the duke and the Muckerwitz is a legend. At the end of the 13th century, the Muckerwitz cannot be proven to be settled in Vogelsang. The importance of the family is greatly exaggerated at Kantzow; it was only with Bernd Mukerviz that they managed to rise to a rank equal to that of the castle- seated families. Vidante does not appear as a first name with the Muckerwitz, it is rather the family name of a lower nobility of Vidante . This family had no property in the area of the Ueckermünder Heide, but was based in Western Pomerania and died out in the middle of the 15th century. The Barnim's cross was probably originally a border marker.

coat of arms

The coat of arms has only survived in the form of a seal from the Slavemer Mokerwytze from 1380. It shows a lion's head in the shield. The timing is not known. On the incomplete seal of Bernd von Muckerwitz from 1459, a helmet ornament reduced to feathers is shown.
