Baron Carrickfergus is a hereditary title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom named after the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim in Northern Ireland .

Awards and history of the title

A barony relating to the city of Carrickfergus existed between 1841 and 1883. On August 18, 1841, Lord George Chichester was given the title of Baron Ennishowen and Carrickfergus , of Ennishowen , in the County of Donegal , by Queen Victoria in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , and Carrickfergus , in the County of Antrim . When his father died in 1844, he inherited his title of 3rd Marquess of Donegall . Since he left no sons, the barony went out when he died in 1883; the marquessate fell to his brother Lord Edward Chichester as the 4th Marquess of Donegall.

With letters patent dated May 26, 2011, the title was recreated by Queen Elizabeth II for her grandson Prince William . The award took place on the occasion of his wedding to Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011. Together with the Barony he was awarded the parent titles Duke of Cambridge and Earl of Strathearn . The titles deliberately refer to all three parts of the United Kingdom , the Dukedom to the English , the Earldom to the Scottish and the Barony to the Northern Irish part of the country.
