Barrie Russell Jones (born January 4, 1921 in Silverstream , near Wellington , New Zealand , † August 19, 2009 in Tauranga , New Zealand) was a British-New Zealand physician and professor of ophthalmology at the University of London .

Life

He studied physics and chemistry at Victoria College in Wellington , then medicine at the University of Otago in Dunedin , where he specialized in ophthalmology with Rowland Wilson. From 1951 he worked in London in the ophthalmology department at Moorfields Eye Hospital and at the then newly founded Institute of Ophthalmology with Stewart Duke-Elder . From 1963 he was professor of ophthalmology at the University of London. From 1965 to 1977 he carried out research into the transmission of the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis in Iran . This bacterium causes an eye infection known as trachoma , which at the time often led to blindness in developing countries . In 1981 he gave up his previous professorship to found the International Center for Eye Health at London University ; He headed this until his retirement in 1986. The aim of this facility was to improve ophthalmic treatment options in developing countries. The significant reduction in the number of trachoma-related blindnesses is considered to be Jones' greatest achievement.

Before turning to preventive ophthalmology, he was known for introducing new microsurgical operating techniques using the microscope. In particular, he dealt with surgery of the eyelids and microsurgery of the lacrimal canal system (dacryocystorhinostomy, DCR).

In 1987 he received the König Faisal Prize for Medicine for his services in establishing preventive ophthalmology. In 1990 he received the Gonin Medal from the International Council of Ophthalmology. He was an honorary member of the Australasian College of Surgeons. In 2004 he received the Global Achievement Award from the International Agency for the Preventment of Blindness. In 1985 he received the CBE award . He returned to New Zealand at the age of 81. Barrie Jones was married with four children.
