Insel ( Low German / Plattdüütsch Issell ) is a district of the town of Schneverdingen in the Heidekreis district in Lower Saxony .

geography

The place is about 4 km northwest of the city center and is connected to it via the K31. The village is a typical heath village with meadows, quarries and woodlands.

The villages of Barrl, Höpen and Reinsehlen as well as the residential areas Reinsehlen / Reinsählen , Barrl / Baal , (Höpen now near Schneverdingen) belong to the island.

history

Numerous prehistoric finds on the island indicate human life at this point as early as the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. The origin of the village is believed to be around the 9th and 10th centuries.

A Wehrmacht airfield was built in Reinsehlen in 1938, which was used as a refugee camp after the end of the war and later by British troops as a base camp for tank exercises in the Lüneburg Heath . The Camp Reinsehlen is a nature reserve today.

On March 1, 1974, the municipality of Insel was incorporated into the municipality of Schneverdingen.

politics

The head of the village is Willi Scholbe.
