Barry Hannah

Howard Barry Hannah (born April 23, 1942 in Meridian , Mississippi , USA , † March 1, 2010 in Oxford , Mississippi) was an American literary scholar and writer .

Life and work

After attending Mississippi College in Clinton , he studied from 1964 to 1967 at the University of Arkansas and graduated in 1967 with a Master of Fine Arts .

In 1972 his first novel "Geronimo Rex" was published. For this he was not only awarded the William Faulkner Prize, but also received a nomination for the National Book Award . His 1996 short stories High Lonesome received a Pulitzer Prize nomination .

In 1983 he was appointed professor of creative writing at the University of Mississippi and held this teaching position until his death. After his death, the university devoted its annual book conference to his literary work.

In addition to writing, Hannah loved motorcycling and alcohol (“hard-drinking lifestyle”). He has been receiving chemotherapy since cancer was discovered in 1995 . He last died of complications from a myocardial infarction . Two of his marriages resulted in divorce. He left a third wife, two sons and a daughter. The book Sick Soldier at Your Door was published posthumously.
