Bartłomiej Pękiel

Bartłomiej Pękiel (Pekiel) (* after 1600; † around 1670 in Krakow ) was a Polish composer of the Baroque era .

life and work

According to Johann Mattheson , Pękiel was of German origin, but since no evidence can be found for this, this information is considered unsecured. From 1630 Pękiel was organist at the royal court and assistant to Marco Scacchi , the royal conductor in Warsaw , later he was given this position himself, which he held from 1649 to 1655. In 1657 he moved to Cracow and succeeded Franciszek Lilius as Kapellmeister at the Wawel Cathedral there . After 1664 his trace is lost in the sources, but his death is believed to have been around 1670, as the position of cathedral music director was filled in October of that year.

Alongside Marcin Mielczewski and Adam Jarzębski , Pękiel was decisive for the artistic level of the Warsaw court orchestra, which at that time was influenced by Italian and incorporated elements of polychoralism . His dialogue oratorio Audite mortales is the only contribution by a Polish baroque composer to this type of work.
