Franciszek Lilius

Franciszek (Franciscus) Lilius (* around 1600; † 1657 in Tarnów ) was a Polish composer .

Originally the family was called Gigli and came from Italy. The father Wincenty Lilius came to Warsaw as a court musician via Graz and Krakow.

Franciszek Lilius received his musical training in the court orchestra of Sigismund III. Wasa . In 1625 he continued his studies in Rome, during which time he lived in the house of Girolamo Frescobaldi . Lilius was one of the most important Polish composers of the 17th century. His music is influenced by the Italians who work in King Sigismund's court orchestra, such as Marco Scacchi or Tarquinio Merula . In 1630 he became Kapellmeister at the Krakow Cathedral , a position he held until his death. Marcin Mielczewski was one of his students .
